Like many of his other works, The Star depicts Degas’ interest in the human figure, notably the female figure, and highlights his attempt to depict his subjects in unusual positions, angles, and postures. The lone ballerina at the center of The Star is shown balancing effortlessly on one leg, paused in a blissful moment of joy as she performs on stage presumably for an audience. The dancer appears happy and carefree, however critics suggest that Degas viewed women in real life in a vastly different way than depicted in his art, especially female performers who often faced extreme disrespect and degradation once they left the stage.
