The Great Wave of Kanawaga, 1829
Hokusai
The Great Wave of Kanawaga is the first in print in Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The wave is shown barreling down on fishing boats returning home from an excursion. The crest of the large wave appears to look like many little claws poised to grasp the boats in its clutches, while the smaller wave in the forefront mirrors the shape and form of Mount Fugi, which can be seen in the distance in the background of the piece. Hokusai utilized the classic Japanese woodblock printing technique to create this piece, in which the final sketch is affixed to a block of wood and then carefully carved to reveal the lines of the drawing.
Taking wearable art to an entirely new level, this highly technical masterpiece has been re-imagined by The Mountain using the medium of ink on fabric.
