Le Désespéré, or The Desperate Man, is a self-portrait created by Gustave Courbet in the early 1840s. At the time, Courbet was steadfastly against the conventions of bourgeois society, including the Romantic art that was characteristic of the time period. Courbet broke from Romantic movement and began to paint subject matters as they truly appeared, not lavishly embellished or imaginative. Ironically, The Desperate Man and other self-portraits Courbet painted, were in fact done in the Romantic style. Although Courbet was recognized for his mastery of Realism, he had an uncanny ability to capture the emotional and psychological state of the individual in his self-portraits. Courbet’s emphasis on Realism established the foundation for Impressionism, which followed in the 20th century.
